I'm a smoker, Charles and think it totally political and unjust as there is no provision for the handicapped generation to get to the smoking areas and back within a 15 minute break. The name of my projected cause of death is termed "Emphysema," totally and out loud blamed on the tobacco companies rather than the automotive and other industries which have reduced our ability to process oxygen from outside or enclosed environments such as the workplace.
Government figures on the dangers of smoking were not available to me 30 years after I had began the habit and 10 years before I was diagnosed with 3, count them 3 separate lung diseases all granted to me via the family line. Check out www.alpha1.com for some input on this, as I was going to get these lung diseases whether or not I smoked.
So far nothing guaranteed about painless quitting is available to us senior smokestacks and most of us are courteous when it comes to not inflicting our addiction on others. I have found some relief from ourtight persecution by my employer whom does not allow smoking on premises by the use of Skoal Bandits chew which comes in pouch form held between gums and teeth. Skoal does caution the user about its product not being a safe alternative to cigarettes, but I have decreased my use of "cancer sticks" via the pouches and you might recommend this to your seniors whom also cannot quit the habit outright.
The smoking bans constitute a hardship on my generation and I feel we should be "grandfathered in" as exempt to these laws because we will be all be dead shortly and the younger generation has the right to approve these dictatorial laws because we fought to preserve their rights to opinion and free speech from the gate.

As much as smoking is unhealthy. It's no ones place to ban smoking. The only exception would be like dont smoke next to the childrens playground or inside a building.

I think state that have gaming casinos have weak governments and smokers should try and quit gambling. The state I live in Louisiana are gutless and they pass a law you can't smoke with children under 13 while driving are they saying after 13 second hand smoke is no longer harmful or are they enticing young drivers to smoke. How ever drinking at the super dome is fine smoking is out are they saying its better to be harm by drunk drivers than second hand smoke. The true reasons the smoking bans or on the rise is because the tobacco company settled these large law suits and now the government has to do something to curb smoking for the suit to be legitimate not because they care, because if they did they would put a state ban on smoking in all public places including bars and casinos, but me I'm quiting and with out the patch, oh that's another crap of bull, I would think the tobacco came up with this, yes it works as long as you use it the nicotine gets to your brain when you stop with the patch or gum you light up, so after a while you stop smoking and remain a nicotine addict just not smoking.

I do smoke, but even where smoking is still an option, I don't smoke in public places. It was a bad habit I picked up in high school and was able to quit while I was pregnant with my children, but picked it back up after then and can't stop right now. I still don't think that it is fare to others who don't smoke to have to breath my smoke, so the ban does not bother me a bit.

..I always wanted to give it up..the booze that is...anyway...pubs have out priced themselves.

I think it's a good idea. I've noticed some people say that "well, people have the choice to leave if they don't want to smoke" but that's not taking the employees health into consideration. Bars are a huge business in my town. They employ a lot of bartenders, waitresses, security, dancers, entertainers...it's a major industry, and those people shouldn't be forced to go to a toxic environment everyday. A lot of business owners around here actually say they're FOR the smoking ban. They want to go smoke-free, but worry it will chase their customers off to the other bars that allow smoking. A smoking ban would allow them to have a smoke free environment, while keeping the playing field even.
I'm all for people having the right to make their own choices. But it's not your right to make a choice that endangers the health of other people around you.

I think its a good thing. I don't see why a smoker cannot wait until they get outside of a restaurant to smoke. Then on the other hand I don't see anything wrong with smoking in bars and nightclubs. You kind of expect it there.

What people do in their own homes is their business..they can eat dog crap if they want.If however they tried eating it next to me and forcing it into my mouth..I wouldn't be best pleased. This is what smokers can't seem to grasp..If they could have a sealed bubble around them, fine but the smoke goes into OUR lungs,OUR clothes too. It's their choice to smoke..it is our choice not to.We even have one person here blaming the tobacco companies for his filthy habit..that's like blaming McDonalds for being fat.
Smoking ban a good thing?..YOU BET!!!

It would depend on the public place...but with care homes where the patients are elderly and probably have health issues..than yes, the ban is a good idea...now, if it pertained to privately owned businesses such as bars or restaurants than it should be up to the owner whether to ban the use of a legal substance or not...not the government.......
