That's most likely a fish trying to establish it's self as the dominant fish in the tank. What you are seeing is a little bit of bullying. As long as fins aren't getting torn up and fish aren't hiding at the surface or in corners it should be ok.

What type of fish do you have? What is he "poking" with? If it's a livebearer and he's "poking" with the finger shaped fin protruding from the middle of his lower body, then he is, in fact, mating or attempting to mate. If he's poking other males, it's more of a dominance thing. However, if he's poking with his mouth (ie biting) you might want to separate him before he beats up on the other fish too much.

Several reasons: #1: Your water conditions could be bad and that could be stressing your fish and making them become aggressive. #2: You dropped a territorial species of fish into a community tank which is a no no. #3: You're not feeding your fish enough and they're having to establish a pecking order. #4: Your fish could be stressed due to overcrowding which will cause it to become aggressive also. 5#: Tank temp could be too high. These are only a few reason.

What type of fish? Probably not mating. They only mate with their own kind.

you did not say what type of fish it is or how recent you have put him in your tank it he is new he is trying to show is dominance or territory try rearranging your decorations to see if that helps if not make sure you know what type of fish it is and put more detail in your question
