The Aztecs had figured out plumbing--they had fresh, clean water coming in to their capital, Tenochtitlan, and dirty sewer water going out in separate facilities where it irrigated crops, so they were not subject to filth borne illnesses that killed off the Europeans in their cities. As a result, at the time of the conquest, Tenochtitlan was probably the world's largest city, population estimated at 400,000, which was about 10 x the size of the next largest city in the world, Paris, subject to water borne plagues because plumbing had not yet been understood there.
