16.
At one time, it was 16 out of 21. Now there are 30 teams, so it is not quite so absurd.

As everyone else has indicated.... 16 teams in total make the playoffs. 8 from each conference... East and West. The top team in each division make up the top 3 seeds in each conference in order of their points totals. The next best 5 teams comprise seeds 4-8 in each conference... again in order of point totals which is why a team like Detroit or Nashville may actually finish with the 2nd most points in their conference yet still be seeded 4th in the playoffs. .
A bit of a side issue...
There is a movement underway to balance out the schedules a bit more so that there are not so many divisional games played... and so more teams get to face each other during the regular season. As it stands now... divisional teams face each other in the regular season 8 times each(32 games), teams then play the other 10 teams in their conference 4 games each(40 games) and then the 10 remaining games are played against the 15 teams from the other conference... meaning that many teams never get to face each other even once in the regular season.
Some people are more in favor of fewer divisional games and having every team in the league face each other at least once each season. From a marketing point of view it would be nice to have a chance for fans to see all the young stars at least once versus their home teams... as it stands now... it could be 2 or 3 years before certain teams even play in the home rinks of some opponents.

Eight teams from each conference make the playoffs. The top team in each division are the top three seeds in each conference, and then seeds 4-8 are the next best teams based on points.
So there are a total of 16 teams in the playoffs, 8 per conference.

There are a total of 16 teams that go to the playoffs.
8 of the teams are from the Western Conference and the other 8 are from the Eastern Conference.
The top 3 teams in each conference are division leaders (out of the 3 divisions in each conference.)
The other teams are seeded according to the number of points they received over the season (2 pts for a win, 1 for an overtime loss, and none for a loss)

16 teams, 8 from the Western Conference and 8 from the Eastern Conference, go to the playoffs in the National Hockey League. If you go to www.nhl.com and click on the "standings" icon, they will tell you who currently holds every playoff position in each conference, and that 8 teams from each conference will make the playoffs. Any newspaper should also tell you these statistics.
