I never really learned how to swim i just taught myself. Everyone else seems like they can swim underwater no problem without losing breath or irritating their nose while i have to blow out so it doesn't burn but when i do i run right out of breath. how do i do it right?

I always believed that one has to 'feel' the water to be able to swim. Anyways if you have taught yourself how to swim that is a very good job.

Ok to answer your question test it out: Go underwater, dont breathe in or breathe out. If you notice, no water goes in no water goes out. How about when you are moving through the water? None either right? To cut short a long explanation, your pressure in your lungs equals or is greater than the water pressure. That is why no water goes in, when no water is rushing into the direction of your nose at least. So when you are swimming or just simply putting your head under the water, no water goes in.

But here is the problem, you you do tumbleturns or more dynamic movements water does get into your nose. Hence you need to breathe out of your nose to exert a pressure so that the water does not get in. Since you have this problem perhaps you might already know what situations these are.

In short, when doing normal swimming just breathe IN through your MOUTH (never nose, because you will usually get the damp feeling in your nose. this is uncomfortable to everyone). Breathe OUT you can use BOTH (just note, if you want fast breaths, mouth is faster). Another thing you can keep in mind is be confident with your breathing, you need to exhale to inhale - exhale while in the water and inhale while your head is out of the water. This will help you relax and perhaps help you better in swimming

all the best :)

Yes, I teach swim lessons and coach a team and we always tell everyone to blow bubbles out of their mouths. This makes your breathing more efficient. When you put your mouth out of the water you should ONLY be exhaling or you will throw off your stroke rythm as well as waste energy. Breathe in through your mouth and your nose, fully filling your upper body with oxygen. It takes practice, but you'll get it.

I dont as I think it takes more energy and makes your run out of air faster, and I basically just focus my mind on something like swimming my turns starts finishes etc and I just focus on that and then I dont really think about breathing in my nose or out of my nose.
