I have a Peugeot diesel engine fitted in my camper. I now need to raise the gearing to give me approx. 20mph/1000rpm instead of the standard 16.4mph.

Could I, for instance, fit the diff. from a beetle box?

Or any other ideas welcomed.

theres two ways to achieve this. either as you suggest change the diff... final drive ratios are easily available, then just find one...

or you could just put bigger wheels/tyres on.. increase the rolling radius will drop the gear ratio... the consequence is youll accellerate slower, but have a higher cruising speed,or improved fuel economy if you dont use the extra speed...

but, we pay for it... one way or another... speed is just a question of money. how fast do you want to go?

Simply go to your V Dub. dealer's parts room with your vin #. They can find all your vehicles build information on their factory computer. Your final drive ratio will be on that list. Think about this very carefully. If you correctly raise the numerical ratio of your differential your are correct the RPM'S will drop. The downside will be you'll lose RPM's at any given speed. Your power will power band will require more throttle to maintain the same speed in all gears. You'll actually be using more fuel. There's only one condition your plan will work and that's with all flatland driving. If you choose to go with your gut feeling raise the ratio as little as possible. If you have a 4.00 final drive go to the next highest A 3.75 - 3.80.

You may want to look into "TheSamba.com". It is an all VW website that may help you with this question. There are forums, classified, and other points of interest. Check it out. I own a 67' bug and a myers manx dune buggy. It is bar far, the best VW site I have found. There are also links to other things like nechinc shops and high performance shops that may also help you.

On another note, the ring and pinion gears will change your drive, but they are matched. This means that if your change them, you have to have a matched set.
