Over a period of months, you've determined that the receptionist hates the sight of you through a series of interactions ranging from biting your head off to completely ignoring you. Until one day, the receptionist finally tells you after asking how they are doing in a coarse tone to not talk to them for no reason. What do you do?

A. Nothing
B. Write a formal letter of complaint and submit it to management

Here's what I would do.

First, find out if she's only rude to you or is it everyone or just men or certain persons. If it's everyone, then it's not a personal issue. She clearly has some kind of problem. Strange for a receptionist but I've seen priests and psychiatrists with personality disorders!

If it's just you then I would ask her straight out why she's so rude towards you. Try not ot be confrontational about it but to the point, "Excuse me , but you just told me not to talk to you and I don't understand why. What is the problem?" Hopefully, she will tell you but sometimes not. If she refuses to tell you or gives you a strange answer then perhaps raise it with someone. Keep in mind, she's just one person at the company and she's not someone you depend on. So, her being rude and not speaking to you is not crucial or really all that important to you. It's just annoying or bothersome. The least confrontational person to raise it with would be HR (if the company is large enough to have one.) HR is trained in handling disputes between employees and so on.

I once had coworker like this receptionist. She would ignore me, try to avoid interacting with me over work anyway possible and finally, would snap at me if she had to interact with me. I couldn't understand why for the longest time. Then someone explained it to me. She's french canadian but hates french people (Adolf Hitler syndrome, he hated Jews even though he was 25% jewish himself.) When I started I noticed she had a french name and spok english with an obvious french accent. So I always greeted her in french. That pissed her off. I explained that I didn't know she hated that but she was weird and expects you to know this before even getting to know her.

Now, I'm going to finish off with my strongest point. Why are you so concerned about ONE person at work? She doesn't actually work directly with you. Does anyone else treat you jlike this? Do others complain about you? I take it the answer is no. Well, why are you so concerned about her? She probably has some personality disorder or something. It is really strange for a receptionist to be that rude to ANYONE!! You would think the job attracts someone warm and friendly! Just goes to show, there's weird people in every line of work.
