If a last name ends with "s," how do you make it plural?... do you use just an apostrophe or... [s's] apostrophe s?... Note that it is plural possessive.. i.e., Jones' Jones's Joneses'.. which one?

So far, some answers have one or the other part right, but no one seems to have both parts right.

Plural - Joneses (as in "keeping up with the Joneses")

Possessive - Jones's (as in "Bridget Jones's Diary")

They are pronounced the same but spelled differently.

If you are going to visit Mr. and Mrs. Jones, you are going to see the Joneses. You have added -es. Apostrophes are not needed for simple plurals here.
If you are talking about going to their home, you are going to the Joneses' home. The plural possessive needs -es'.

I've always understood it as this: Never change the person's name, meaning don't add extra letters that aren't an original part of their name. So in the case of the Jones (meaning the Jones family) you would add an apostrophe after the "s" ---Jones'

You use an Apostrophe +s Jones's

The reason is that you are referring to the people as 1 group..it is a singular group. So, it still follows the rules of a singular possessive.

Ummmmmmmm........................s'. EX. James' dogs. Well.....at least that is what I think. But..........I'm only in 7th grade, and I usually get mixed up myself!!! LOL!! =) =) =)
