Doulas are birthing assistants that are a primary support for the mom in labor and the partner or spouse...i would provide massage to the mother and partner coach breathing, and provide allround support during the whole labor...also i would learn techniques to help the baby to move down in the birth canal. Doulas stay with u throughout the whole labor. I do have a medical backround i am a nursing tech...and right now specializing in massage therapy. I would be there to make the whole birth more bearable

I had a doula at my second child's birth. Her dad was not present (military), so it was wonderful to have an advocate for me. She was also a massage therapist, and the massage was very helpful. I am also considering this career path. I think what helped most was being surrounded by a bunch of women who had gone through natural childbirth before. I had two midwives in the room (one just observed), my mom, and my doula, all of whom had given birth naturally. Having a doula was great for me. She even spread peanut butter on graham crackers for me and helped me sip soda.

If I may piggyback on your question -- what reasons, if any, are there to have one at a home birth with a midwife?

Edited to add: Hmm. Okay. I hear 'massage' a _lot_ when it comes to doulas. I can't stand massage, pregnant or otherwise.

I'll have two midwives and a husband there -- a doula would just, I think, be one person too many. So, no... Apart from not wanting a crowd, it's a lot of money for somebody I'd pretty much be using as a sort of cook/maid/general dogsbody...

That said, if something happens and I have to start looking at giving birth in a hospital, I'll definitely be looking into a doula.

Absolutely. Because I'm not a good candidate for home birth or birth center birth, I think a doula would be to my benefit, and my spouse's benefit. I would very much like to have that additional advocate, someone familiar with the hospital policies and who may know the doctors and nurses better than we do, and could provide additional support to the decisions that we made about how I'd like to give birth.

I did have a doula. i became 20 and there have been no interventions. i in my opinion had a house beginning, and the in reality reason we had a doula became because we initially had planned a medical institution beginning and had already employed her by technique of the time we determined to flow with a house beginning. I loved having her there besides inspite of the truth that. She became stunning. i did not have my placenta encapsulated yet I heavily concept about it and could do it next time, fantastically because I had truly some melancholy after my daughter became born and that i have examine that being able to take the pills can help with that.

If I could find a doula in my area I would not be opting for a repeat c-section. I think that it is good that you are interested in this field, there aren't enough people out there that want to do that. I think that there is so much going on when a woman is in labor that some women needs help in focusing their energy into letting their bodies do the work and not so much about what is going on around them. Good luck and congratulations on you decision.

I would onlywant someone with medical experience. I had my baby delivered my a midwife instead of a doctor (at the hospital of course) and she was wonderful........I would go with the midwife again (the same one) but I am not sure about a Doula.
