for example,can a goldfish and let say a catfish.can they both mate and the female catfish lay eggs with da daddy goldish or does it have to be the same kind?

Xiphophorus maculatus, or platies). Gold fish and cat fish aren't even close.

No they are different species of fish. The relations are not close enough to make hybrids. A few fish can cross species like for instance a sand bass and a striper make a fish we call in texas a hybrid bass, having characteristics of both and growing very large.
