I once thought of a brilliant name for my boat eye catching, but was quite long and when I found out that sign makers charge by the letter I had a better idea and called it "Y4"
when you are thinking of a name think about how others hear it, you may have to say it over the radio. Avoid names like "Titanic2" and "Ivor Bigun" "weed" "hash" "drug runner" etc are also not advised. Also think about where you used it. whats the point in calling it ocean ranger if you sail it only on weekends.
avoid miss spellings as it confuses people. and finally one day you will want to sell it and a crap name can put people off. I once went to see a lovelly yatch with the unfortunate name of "nookie 3" I didn't buy it!

The best way to name a boat is to think of something that either has meaning for you or will always remind you of it. Many people name thier boats after women, because they're unpredictable, and usually wind up costing you an arm and a leg.

I have a small aluminum boat that I called "can", because a can is a 'tinny' when I order a drink afterwards, and it really 'can' get me fishing in the meantime.
A longer name might not fit on the side either.
