I got a 1GB thumb drive that came with a FAT file system. would it be a good idea to format it to NTFS or is that not a good idea with such a small drive?

I would leave it as a FAT because NTFS can not be read on mac or linux systems, or windows ME and 98 so it won't be very compatible. NTFS only provides more network security options on a drive, so it would not prove anything to have the extra security on a flash drive because you usually don't share them over a network anyway.

There would be no benefit and nopoint to format it to NTFS.
