--don't prematurely judge others

--get to know people and judge them based on the merits of your relationship

--justice is relative to one's society

--hate is pervasive in civilization and stewards of our society have a responsiblity to combat hate for the greater good

--prejudice exists, wheter it be racist, ageist, or prejudice because of preconceived notions of someone's educational status (educated look down on the uneducated, uneducated reject the educated)--differences both bring people together and tear them apart in this novel

--Southern men hate the thought of a black man with a white woman--not sure if that is a lesson, but it is at the heart of the conflict, and sadly, it still rings true today
