Matt Groening has revealed that after the successful revival of the Family Guy series, 20th Century Fox Television approached him to produce a direct to DVD Futurama movie. That one DVD turned into four and Comedy Central entered into an agreement with 20th Century Fox Television to syndicate the existing episodes and air the new movies as new episodes in an episodic format in 2008. The new season will be set two years after the events of the last season, and will re-visit Fry and Leela's relationship and unanswered questions about Nibbler, dark matter and Seymour the dog.
Makes me want to bend something!

Matt Groening (creator) and Katey Sagal (voice of Leela) have both stated that when Comedy Central obtains the rights to the show in 2008 (currently those rights belong to Cartoon Network, but that will expire at the end of this year), it will air 17 all-new episodes. It is my understanding that the episodes are already in production and some may even be completed already.
Obviously, if the ratings are sufficient for those new episodes, the producers will create more new episodes in future seasons.

They stopped making new episodes FIVE YEARS AGO.
But they are supposed to start making them again and they should appear on Comedy Central starting next year...they were likely inspired by the return of Family Guy.
