Actually my daughter's friend in school who is Indian has the name Poonam. So just because it doesn't conform to all your English names doesn't mean it isn't someone's name. As just one example from WikipediaPoonam Dhillon (born April 18, 1962) is a highly famous and celebrated, Indian bollywood movie actress.

Well what is your background? To some it may seem odd, but to another religion or background, it may be great.
In my opinion it doesnt sound american. But it does not sound like a bad name either.
