The essential idea of this project is to show the effect of various drinks on the teeth, using egg shells in place of teeth because their makeup is similar to that of teeth. Basically you select a variety of common drinks (orange juice, sprite, coke, etc), with water and vinegar as your controls. Next you take several eggs and blow out the insides while leaving the shells intact — adult help is suggested. Then fill several containers with your selected drinks and place the shells in the liquid. The shells will float, but this is okay, because enough of it will have been in contact with the fluids. Leave the egg shells in the drinks for as long a time as you like, recording their progress along the way — for example, record at one day, three days, and five days, or whatever you like. You can even do several sets at different times to measure deterioration. Use the egg shells placed in water and in vinegar to measure the deterioration of the others — you know that the shell in water will not deteriorate at all, and that the shell in vinegar will be eaten away rather drastically. I did this project several years ago for my seventh grade science fair and got very good results. Good luck with whatever project you choose to do!
