I have to do a project for World Geography about Human Rights violations in China. What are some suggestions? I can do something artful or a PowerPoint, as well as something like a mobile or collage. Anything goes as long as its respectful to those suffering and relatively tasteful.

"tasteful" is my teacher's word, not mine.

I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and I think I can help you on this project.

First of all, you need to understand my country's history. We spend about 5000 years under a monarchism sysyem so we are use to have no rights at all. In the year 1911, China became Asia's first nation with democracy and freedom of speech. But it only last for less then a year then WWII broke out and after that came the civil war. In the end the communist took power.

So as you can see, we Chinese people only had less then a year of democracy in our history! We don't have too much reaction againts human rights violations as long as it is not some very serious atrocity.

As for your question, the human rights violations are not as bad as it use to be but it still happends. The groverment still don't let the information to be free. In China you can't go to websites like Tibet.com, boycotchina.com and those kinds of internet sites. But if you are not going to thoses kind of site you will be fine.(After all I can come to this website.)

As for the religions, it is no longer outlawed in China like it use to be. For instance, There are at least 150 million Muslim living in China today and there are Muslim schools, Muslim restaurants and Mosque every were in China. We even stoped companys from putting pigs on their advertisements just so we won't offend any Muslims. But as for the Roman Catholic Church, the government tries to appoint men as bishops in the church and not allow 100% free worship.

But in order to be fair, I think you should talk about some of the improvements the China had in past decades. My goverment changed from planned econmy to free market econmy and the lives of the people are improving a lot. Also, we can watch TV progrems from other nations like CNN, AXN and even some shows from Taiwan. They cost lots of money but at lease we can watch it.

I hope this can help! If you want to know more you can take a look at my Q&A or send me a Message, I will be happy to help!

P.S. To prove that I really live in China, the headline of China Daily(the nationsl english newspaper) in February 14 2007 was "Nation faces higher risk of floods and drought".

How can you make human rights abuses "tasteful?" Stand up and show the horror and oppression of a Communist regime.
