Currently, passports are taking about 10 weeks to process from the time you submit the application. The normal turnaround is 6 weeks, but the passport offices are overloaded due to the new passport requirement for air travel from Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean to the U.S.
Expedited service can get you a passport within 3 to 4 weeks, but it costs an additional $60 + overnight mail costs, in addition to the regular fees which are:
$97 (for persons 16 and older) or
$82 (for persons under 16)

Go to www.travel.state.gov/passport, it's the US State Departments website concerning passports. The website should be able to answer any questions you might have. There is a backlog for getting passports these days, the passport agency recommends expediting your application if you need it less than eight weeks from now, of course there is an extra fee for that. Good luck!

Take your birth certificate and license to your local PASSPORT post office (only certain post offices handle passports). They'll take your picture and help you fill out all the forms. Then, you have to mail everything. You should receive your passport in up to 45 days, unless you choose express handling.

You need a passport picture, you can get that taken at a kinkos or someplace that does passport pictures, and also a proof of your birth and age, and that's about it. It only takes as long as the line at the passport place. It took me only 20mins to wait in line.
