we as a unified country of US why we all caught up in war instead of correcting the mistakes of our countries?
why we so arrogant about immigration issues if we all are indeed immigrants to the land of the vast tribes.
why cant we give back some land?
look at the native americans now,
sad. casino owners. and those who lost respect as the true owners of this land.
Is America willing to help bring the diverse cultures back and stop fighting until the problems of racism, and others are reduced?

Some americans would say "quit complaining" "forget about it" and "move on." Others would say "the natives migrated here too!"
and there are more who say "it's natural selection, survival of the fittest."
I say we can't fight for Iraqi rights, when the rights of our own people have been violated and all we want to do is "forget about it, and move on." Lets forget about iraq and "move on" then...
tikiboy or whoever wants blacks and natives in slave labor camps, proof that some americans have learned NOTHING from the past, so why would we forget about it? 9/11 isn't the only atrocity committed on american soil, and no matter how pissed you are,
WE'LL NEVER FORGET!

I cannot believe the assinine comments made by non native people on Native Americans. I am from the Mi'kmaq Nation and my nation was nearly wiped out from blankets given to us by the non natives which were infected by small pox. PLus, take into account, assimiliation, this was due to the white man in his supposed wisdom wanting to make good christians of what was left of the native population and forced adoptions/fostering and residential schools. Between 1950 and 1975 85% of the native populations children across the USA was taken away from their families mostly by force and put up for adoption or fostering. How can a race survive that amount of population being taken away and hope to survive economically?
When entire nations were systematically wiped out and forced awya from their natural homes/hunting grounds onto some barren reservation land usually miles away from what they had known.
If it wasnt for the Native Nations the white man would not have survived in North America when they landed. It is well known the majority of people who landed in North America would not have survived the harsh climate and a vast majority of them did strave to death. If it were not for the kindness of Native people the rest would have starved to death. Maybe we should have let this happen.
Is America willing to bring back the diverse cultures,I would say not...not until the Nations have more people on the Senate and this is happening.
The Nations are helping themselves and do not look for charity. WE are not racists.....we simply defend our Nations. Will racism end..not as we see it. We see racism directed not just against us but at any race who isnt white.
The Nations now have lawyers, doctors, teachers and all professions in the modern day world. It is time the rest of the world woke up to the fact that we have much more to offer and in fact will be overtaking many of you. We have man man talented people amongst the nations
It is time the rest of the world and I include the USA and Canada started re-educating themselves with regards to the Nations instead of repeating words which they have heard from people about the Nations which is biased and racist and so out of date!

Native people are currentlly fighting for their rights. There are law suits all over, there are movements all over. Just google it and you will see.
You are right, the American government needs to acknowledge the past instead of try and cover it up. Even children know how to apologize for their mistakes. We cannot move on until the first steps are taken. One of these first steps is an apology.
And Native people aren't asking for all the land back. Native people ask for their treaties to be fullfilled. Even less than that Native people want the government who still has control over a percentage of reservation land to let the tribe have that land. They want White land owners (from the reservation) to be allowed only to sell their land within the tribe and not to the government. They just want the land the already own to really be theirs.
And to say that Natives are sad is so disrespectful. Have you ever met a Native person. The stereotypes about casinos are just that, they are just stereotypes. Casinos are used for tribes to make money for their tribe. Casino money goes to tribal housing, health care, mental health care, etc... Native people have the highest poverty rates. Shouldn't they be allowed to make money for their people, to pay for health care? They haven't lost respect. They are fighting for ways to keep their culture. It is true that there are better ways to make money but right now Casinos are easy and some tribes need something easy because nothing else is.
For America to respect diversity (not bring it back because it is already here) they need to acknowledge their mistakes, they need to support cultural education, and they need to allow people of color to make their own decisions.
As for what has happened to Native people. We are a proud people. We are fighting for cultural sustainability. We are fighting for environmental sustainability. We are fighting for cultural education.

I sense that your heart is in the right place, though the composition of your question and comments may be just a bit confusing. Have you ever read "Black Elk Speaks," or "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee"? Have your ever seen "Incident at Oglala," or best of all, "Trudell." John Trudell is the most inspiring human being alive right now, in my opinion. He is a First Nations activist and has routinely been harrassed by the Federal Bureau of Intimidation and other organs of the Police States of America. He also made a stunning portrayal of the warrior ethos in "Thunderheart." I recommend his cd's highly. "Bone Days" is brilliant...much like most everything else he has done.
I would also recommend the writings of First Nations activist, Ward Churchill. He gives a much clearer picture of the history of the US than any of us ever got in high school.
But to answer your question(s). Native people are alive and surviving, despite the continuing interference of the US government. Their culture and heritage is still strong in the hearts of the people. You just might want to travel out west someday and go to a powwow(The Gathering of the Nations in New Mexico, when all the tribes gather to celebrate culture and remember their legacy, is powerful). Also, you can visit many of the reservations. If you do research online, you'll find that most of them have some sort of cultural center that you can visit to learn about the unique culture and history of that particular tribe.
As for the casinos, I don't care for them much either, but think about this: everyone needs to eat. The casinos are one of the few businesses that the US government has not gone out of its way to crush on the rez. The nations would do many more things if they truly had the sovereignty that the US tells them they have while working hard to undermine it. Don't feel sorry about the casinos; it is one way that Native people are able to practice self-determination. That money goes into building the schools and hospitals and housing and what not that the people need. The money goes into documenting the stories of elders, building cultural centers, and preserving important artifacts. The casinos give people jobs and the jobs help them to have self-respect and to be able to feed their families on their own without having to go to the tribe for assistance.
If you want to feel sorry about anyone regarding the casinos, then you might want to feel sorry for the all the white tourists who lose their shirts because they don't have the sense to stop at a reasonable point.
You talk about the land as if it were something to be owned and to be taken and to be given back. This is the white way of seeing the earth. Look up what Chief Seattle said about the land. It is not something to be fenced in or owned. It is not property. It is our mother and it is our life. I am not native or at least not enough that anyone would recognize me as such, but I see the wisdom of the red road. The native people will survive when the rest of the nation collapses.
As for your final question, the US(America is the name of the continents, North and South) is presently engaged in another military adventure to spread its empire and to break the culture and spirit of another people: if Americans are unwilling to do anything to stop the slaughter of women and children in Iraq, there is no sensible reason to consider that they are willing to address racial injustice in their own nation.

regardless of whatever any american would like to think, the US government's policy throughout the first two hundred years as a country towards native americans was genocide. for anyone who would like to dispute this claim, take a look at the number of native americans at the start of the 1700's and compare that to today.
