I am a nudist and have been since I was 10 ( I'm well into the 50's now).
Most people in America associate nudism and nudity with sex.The feeling is if you go nude then you will have sex,and as a true nudist knows this does not happen.

Part of it is the way so many act when they are nude... all they think of it is in sexual tones.... But I have been to European areas where nudity is more open and seen much the same obscean behavior... So much of the depictiuons on tv an movies are all about sexuality and oogling... all of the depictions I see of it in south america are sexual in nature as well... I have been turned off intirely by the depictions of behavior involving nudity in public in South America.... look at some of the responces to this question for some of the negative reasons people disaprove of nudity.

Although many would point to religious reasons for this view of nudity, the truth is that so many people have difficulty with acceptance of their own bodies. We are a media driven culture and have painted a picture of the "perfect people" in our own minds. The perfect person is the bone thin model or the beautiful actress or handsome actor. In the mind of the average person, they don't measure up to these "perfect people." So, it all boils down to people being uncomfortable with their own bodies.

Pandering politicos keep natural nudity, accepted around the world, a problem here. They think farmers in Iowa don't like to see womens breasts, but they do too!

It isn't that "so many" of us are. But in the US we have a society that has to pander to the most conservitive. If it is offensive to enough people than laws are passed to bar or limit whatever it is.

Stems from the founders of this country who were Puritans. Many of the laws they created are still in effect today.

Cause it's colder up here for a good part of the year and we're used to being dressed, so it's harder for us to think about running around without them

YEARS AGO IN THE NORTHERN STATES MOTHERS USED TO SEW THE CLOTHES ONTO SMALL CHILDREN SO THEY COULDNT TAKE THEM OFF EASILY. MANY SMALL TODDLERS FROZE TO DEATH BY STREAKING NAKED OUTSIDE DURING FORTY TO FIFTY BELOW WINTER WEATHER. MAYBE THAT COULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE FEELINGS REGARDING NUDITY. I AM FROM THE NORTH AND I WAS BORN THERE AND IT FELT VERY COLD IN THE DELIVERY ROOM.
