You most likely have a bad resistor card on the sender assembly. These had a habit of doing some strange things as they open the circuit very quickly and then reconnect. These are very easy to replace though. You have an access panel on top of the floor board just inside the trunk when you go in through the back seat. Pull your rear seat forward so you can open the port where the trunk is accessible. Pull the trunk carpet back and remove the gasketed cover. Voila, there is the sending unit at the top of your tank. You can now simply remove the connectors and fuel lines and get the sender out. I am not sure what they sell to repair this, but I think you can just buy the fuel guage resistor board and install it on the old sender. They might have changed that though.

A good possibility is a bad ground wire where it is screwed onto the body. Raise the car and find the ground wire, usually fastened close to where the hoses come out. Remove the screw and scratch the spot on the body and the ring on the wire with sandpaper until they both are shiny. Use a new screw and put in back on. Try it to check if it's working better. A simple check could save you $$$.
If this don't work, run the car nearly out of gas when you have it fixed. That way, the tank is easier to handle and with less danger.

Absolutely, very characteristic of a bad sending unit. Just hold onto your hat when you price parts and labor to replace it. To make sure its not the gauge itself, you can run it 10% at a time from full to empty with a scan tool. This just makes sure the gauge is functioning properly, and the computer is responding properly to the inputs received from the tank.

yes i have replaced alot of newer stile sending units. the connector at the top of the sending unit gets loose and causes a bad connection and burns the fuel sending unit part of the harness out. does not affect the fuel pump. just the gas gauge does not work properly. and yes very exspensive to buy the feul sending unit.
