download software like skype, freecall or voipbuster and u can call landlines and mobiles in kenya, from ur pc. you can compare the rates and see which one suits u the best.

calling cards are pretty expensive to use coz u get less minutes depending on where ur calling from, however if u have a landline, u can get 200 mins talk time to a landline in nairobi for a reasonable rate.

ps: i personally use skype and its pretty good. its even cheaper to send texts to mobiles in nairobi from skype, rather than any mobile operator.

Calls to a cell phone (which is what most people have) are very frustrating. The sound quality is very poor. However, it's worth a try during off-peak hours from a land line. Otherwise, if you have access to a computer with a microphone you can use CallServe or some other computer phone company. You will have to sign up and find a way to pay them (credit card is easiest), but it's much cheaper than using land lines.

Another route to go for everyday "just keeping in touch" messages is to send sms messages to their phone. I use VIP CBFSMS through my computer to do this to send text messages to phones in Kenya. They are based in UK but I live in Canada and have had no problems at all. Again, a lot cheaper than phone calls.

I have traveled from the US to Africa several times and have found the best way to keep in touch with the family is the Internet. Phone calls are generally frustrating if not impossible. Because of the time difference it becomes a headache to try to call the US. My suggestion would be to e-mail your family and keep in touch that way. Not to shamelessly plug Yahoo, but that email worked the best for me.

A microphone on your computer can go a long way. there are dozens of programs that will allow you to chat online, and it doesn't matter where in the world. My sister-in-law talks to her family in Taiwan using her webcam with microphone.
