So this is the situation:
my father slammed the door on his thumb.
It is now swollen, black, and purple ish.
He's going to the doctor tomorrow.
But he thinks the nail will fall off and not grow back.
Will that really happen? Because I've had that happen to me (albeit with less force, resulting in slight bruising), but my nail is fine now.
So what will happen? The nail is currently still attached.
Please give advice (particularly if you have medical experience of this sort). No guesses please.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks guys.
Very interesting---mine never falls off. But then again, I hardly push the door hard enough for it to turn black lol.
Ah, hopefully it won't fall off. but even if it does, it will eventually ultimately grow back, right?
EEK!
yeah painful. thanks for all your input thus far.

I've had this happen to me a couple of times.. actually it's kind of amazing.. usually when the nail turns purple it will usually fall off but not until a new nail is formed.. it's pretty cool actually.. the body is an amazing thing...

In my case, it was my big toe. When I was working at a movie theatre my vest snagged the manual ticket dispenser as I backed away from the counter and it fell over. I wasn't fast enough and it landed on my foot squarely on my toe. It did as you describe your father's thumb in that it swelled, turned purple and black. The nail was intact but after a time it looked as though the nail were starting to thicken, becoming more dense than it was before. It eventually fell off; however since then the toe has started to regrow a nail, although a stunted one. Based on that information it is possible that your father's nail can grow back, just not perfectly and perhaps a bit thicker than it was before.

When I was 8, I slammed my thumb in the car door. It was bleeding all over the place and I ended up going to the ER because I ripped the nail out of the nailbed. The doctor stitched it up and put a bandage over it. He warned me that the nail would fall off, but it would definitely grow back. He was right. Now, 9 years later, my nail looks perfectly healthy. Not only is it there, it's not even deformed. I have no reason to believe that your father's nail will not grow back if it even falls off. I mean, I ripped my nail OUT OF THE NAILBED, and it's completely fine. Unless your dad's situation is worse than mine was, it will definitely grow back.

This happened to me and the heavy door actually locked! If the nail is on now it will stay on. Mine only had this huge dent in the nail, which grew out. I'm glad he is going to the doctor though to make sure! Good luck on the nail, and sorry for the pain, because BBOOOYY does it hurt!

my brother once dropped a vaccuum cleaner on my left pointer finger. this was back in the day when vaccuums were super heavy yet. my finger got all bruised and swollen. my nail did not fall off but since then it has not grown back right. it looks normal and all but clipping it is difficult because it tears and breaks funny. none of the rest of my nails do this. it did not happen untill after my brother dropped the vaccuum cleaner on it. so i guess your answer is that it either can happen, or it wont. the doctor will be able to tell him what to do either way.

Thousands of people have had their fingers slammed in car doors. Not me personally thank God, but I know lots of people who has had this happen to them. Some lost their nails at some point, some did not but they all grew back. If not we would see lots of people without nails.

It has happened to me and the nail hasn't fallen off.
BUT it has happened to my mom once and my sister twice and their nails fell off every time.
Mine didn't turn black but theirs did and so since your father's nail turned black there is a high chance for it to fall off.

Your dad needs not to worry the nail will grow back. It's like cutting your hair. When you cut your hair, it grows back because we are all living organisms.
