I was wondering if I could add a second hard drive, and just access it,instead of having to format it first!

If it is a brand new drive it will have to be formatted. If it is a used drive with a compatable file system then you can attach it as a slave as is.

However if you do not know the origin and history of this additional drive you should be aware of potential virus threats which may be lurking on the unknown drive... You would be better served to install it as the only drive and boot drive installation software from the manufacturer and do a low level format to completely erase it. Otherwise you risk spreading a virus onto your PC and existing hard drive.

Yeah you can drop a secondary in and access files from it....can't use any installed programs that might be on it but you can access the data....remember to set the jumpers correctly or you'll be asking a followup question in the near future

you should format it first, the same as your master drive.
