doesn't recognize it as a drive. Is there something wrong with the computer, cord, or ipod.

I have tried putting the IPOD IN diskmode but it dosen't work

my old computer did the same thing but then i figured out that my computer was to old to reconise the software

sooo how old is your computer
if its a newer one its the i-pod

Could be any of those. First thing I would try is connect something else to the USB port and see the computer recognizes it. If not, I'd suspect the USB port.

If it does recognize another device on the USB port, then the cable would be the first thing I would look at, assuming your ipod is otherwise working fine.

On my system - "device manager" sees the ipod as a usb mass storage device.

Are you using a Mac? If so, you may need to update your OS - newer iPods require at least 10.3.9, plus iTunes 7. However, since your iPod also isn't charging, it could also be the cable or the port on the computer. Try changing where the iPod is plugged in, or see if you can borrow a cord from a friend. You may also want to try resetting your iPod - go to Apple's website for instructions for your model iPod: http://www.apple.com/support/

try plugging the usb cable into another port.
