Because people need to and like to talk to each other. Or at each other.

It's good to not overthink certain answers.

I believe speech flourishes in places where one can speak freely, but at the same time there must be others willing to listen. If there is no one to listen than speech is pointless. I know that over time what people consider a "Democracy" has changed. For example: the U.S. was considered a "Democracy" when slavery was legalized in the U.S., but now people don't veiw nations that legalize slavery as "democratic". In my opinion there is no single answer as to why speech flourishes more in "Democratic" nations than in Dictorial nations. I suggest getting all the facts that surround "Democracy", and all the facts that surround Dictorial nations, and then draw a comparison, and see why both forms of government are different. Because one must know both sides if one is to know which side is better...like that saying "one cannot know what good is unless one knows what evil is".

Speech flourishes in undemocratic societies as well where all speeches may be limited to a few permissible viewpoints. Even in your society certain viewpoints are tabboo or evoke severe negative reaction. You may frame your question better to eliminate groups such as the Taliban which I am sure engage in profuse, dogmatic, narrowly focused speech. How do you define a democratic society?

People in this day and age have no pride. I am by no means a scholar, but I try to sound articulate. Most of the people today don't care what other people think they sound like and don't encourage others to speak well. Personally, I see it as a regression of society as a whole, But again, I'm no scholar!

I personally attribute it to the ability to speak freely with the right to refuse critisiscm. Also, modern media (i.e. instant messaging) and modern culture strives to create new simple and catchy words.

I know a slew of people that just hear big words, but don't even bother to look them up to pronounce them properly. Television is also a huge factor. We don't have to read what the people are saying, we just imitate the sound and context of it (that is unless we have closed captioning).
