im in 8th grade, and im planning out the next four years of my life. i have very little ideas about where to go, except that my dream and goal of life is to be an actress. im also a bit interested in interior design. im thinking of majoring in acting, and minoring in interior design. got any colleges that might be good for me? i've googled fine arts colleges, and visual & preforming arts colleges, and not had very good results. a website would help greatly.

It's fabulous that you're starting to plan now. My daughter, currently a dance major in college, also started mapping out her path towards college when she was in 8th grade, and it wasn't too soon. When it comes to the arts, there is nothing like going out and actually seeing what students are doing through performances and such to know whether you like what you see. Yet since you have to catch this action while school is in session, there are only limited time slots when you can arrange such visits. Spring breaks are a prime opportunity that only come once a year.

It's generally not a good idea to ask for such broad recommendations from such a broad audience, as you're bound to get other 8th graders chiming in with uninformed responses. I trust you're taking acting classes somewhere? Start by asking your acting teachers for recommendations. If you then attend summer camp programs or perform in community theater, keep on asking for recommendations.

But then comes the work of sorting through those recommendations to find the best program for YOU. Big school or small school? Urban setting or park-like enclave? An arts school or one with conference sports? And so forth and so on. Invest in some guide books such as "College Guide for Performing Arts Majors 2007" by Carole J. Everett, or "Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians, and Writers," by Elaina Loveland. Review them carefully and ponder your options. Your campus visits, along with talking to the students on the various campuses, are what will make your final decisions about where to apply.

On a final note, I'm going to say that there is a 98% chance that you won't be able to combine a major in acting with a minor in interior design. However, you should definitely be able to minor in set design, which is virtually the same thing. You just won't believe how intensive a fine arts major is until you're there. Arts students spend longer hours in classes, rehearsal or in the studio. It's tough fitting in extra academic electives much less another art specialty. My daughter has yet to find time to take her one required acting class for her major, and she only has one year left after this semester.

Although your dream is to become an actress, make sure you find a way to explore interior design in your high school years as well.
