the burnt smell that you smelled was probally your blower motor burning out or the relay to it (if you open it up you will see a relay some times they just pup out before the motor goes push it in and you may be good to go) a good way to test if this is what happen turn your thermostat to the fan postion if it dosnt turn on then the blower motor or relay is your problem good luck

Sounds like the windings in the motor may have shorted.
Could also possibly be that the motor tripped on thermal overload if so equipped.

This is not something for the average do it your selfer to accomplish. Please call a professional HVAC contractor to diagnose, repair, and ultimitely inspect all safeties on the unit for your own safety.
