I fell off a curb yesterday and I don't know if I twisted or sprained my ankle.
My whole ankle bone is completely swollen so I can't see it, I'm slowly getting a large bluish bruise around my ankle. I can still walk, but it's with a limp.
Which does it sound more like? A twisted ankle, or a sprain? I haven't seen a doctor yet and I'm trying to get the swelling down.
I'm gonna try and play a hockey game in an few hours (with a brace on) and I'm the goalie, so as little swelling would be great.
Is there a difference between a sprain and a twist? If so, which does it sound like?

Sound like a sprain, but I would have to see it. the difference is that a sprain would take a week or 2 to heal where a twist should only take a few days. If you go the doctor all he will say is put Ice on it and rest. So I suggest you do that. Don't push yourself when injured b/c you can make it worse. I played lots of football and had plenty of injuries and know if you play while hurting you can really make things worse. Today you should just rest and take it easy and wait until the swollen comes down. stay off your feet if you can.
Take care...

The only way to know for sure is with an X-ray.I would get myself to the ER to have that seen about soon, forget trying to get the swelling down before you se a MD.Playing a game of hockey tonight is not a good idea, you could damage your ankle more, and worsen the injury. There isn't much difference between a "sprain" and a "twist" they both are soft tissue injuries involving tendons and ligaments, that need to be taken care of by the Doctor, especially since you're an athlete. Take care. SW RNP

Sounds like a sprain...be sure to put some ice on it before your game for abobut 15 minutes, it will help with the swelling a bit.
Also, be careful if you do plan on actually playing today. Make sure you keep it in a brace, and if it persists for about a week, then go see the doctor, because you might need to go to a physical therapist.
Later on tonight after your game if you have a jacuzzi or even your bath tub, fill it up with hot water and let the water pressure run onto your ankle, and keep trying to move it, this will help keep your mobility so it will be likely to hurt less later on and help with the healing process.

i apologise for the misconception... it seems more like a minor sprain .
heres why:
When an ankle is injured with a sprain, tendon injury, or fracture, inflammation occurs. Blood vessels become "leaky" and allow fluid to ooze into the soft tissue surrounding the joint. White blood cells responsible for inflammation migrate to the area, and blood flow increases as well. Typical changes that happen with inflammation, include the following:
Swelling because of increased fluid in the tissue: Sometimes the swelling is so severe that you can leave an indentation in the swollen area by pressing on it with your finger.
Pain because the nerves are more sensitive: The joint hurts and may throb. You can make the pain worse by pressing on the sore area, by moving the foot in certain directions (depending upon which ligament is involved), and by walking or standing.
Redness and warmth caused by increased blood flow to the area

I am not sure what happened but since you dont know what exactly happened and you leg is swelling, you should not put any more stress. It is a very bad idea to play in that game because you can cause more damage especially since you dont know what exactly it is. If it is swelling and bruising, you need to put ice on the ankle and lay down with your ankle on some pillows above the level of your heart to stop it from swelling.

It sounds like a sprain.
Do as sunny suggested.
Also, do NOT play hockey. A sprained ankle won't heal right even with a brace. You need to stay off of it.

You should have it checked as soon as possible and don't delay it. If you have pulled or torn a muscle in your ankle and it starts to heal incorrectly, you could look forward to a limp for the rest of your life. If you have swelling and bruising, this is a sign of an injury and it should be taken care of a.s.a.p.

a sprain is an injury to ligaments caused by twisting or falling.. a strain is an injury to muscle or tendon due to overuse or overstretching.. try RICE rest, ice, compression and elevation...
hope this helps.. Good luck!

If you can walk then I think it's just a sprain, but only a doctor can be sure. =)
