There are three ways in which protists can be classified according to movement. Those who use extensions of the cytoplasm called pseudopodia are classified as amoebas (phylum Rhizopoda). Those who use small hairlike projections called cilia to move are classified as ciliates (phylum Ciliophora). Those who use long whiplike "tails" called flagella are classified as flagellates (phylum Zoomastigophora).

Protozoa are classified that way: moving by cilia, flagella, pseudopodia, or not at all.

For example, paramecia move with cilia.
