GAP has been pretty blah for about the last seven years. when stores like Hollister, AF, etc. started to become popular they tried to focus on that same group and they sacrificed their quality and came up with very bad ideas. The older crowd won't shop there because their quality is bad and the younger crowd won't shop there because they aren't trendy enough. So that leaves you with nobody. The company was truly successful when they marketing to the true preppy (not the bad word young people think) that wore oxford shirts, khaki pants, etc.

when they started buying up other companies like Banana Republic; they were OK when Old Navy premiered back in the 90s but got complacent somewhere around the Banana Republic acquisition. Forth and Towne didn't help them much either all they did was put their energies into those other companies and took all of the inspiration out of the Gap. they haven't been good for about 5 years, at least. I'll still shop there because you can get good stuff for really, really, cheap, given their predicament.
It's a shame about Forth and Towne though; the company really thought they were giong to move beyond the 20 something prep to the 30 something prep.

GAP, first of all, has always been "dowdy" and UGH! gross. second of all, their clothes are not preppy at all, it's more like casual wannabe trendy. by the way abercrombie and hollister aren't preppy either, they are more casual, trendy, with a small touch of prep. Polo, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste are preppy brands. lastly, GAP clothes are cheap and low-quality, preps usually wear more high-quality and classy clothes.
sorry i hate GAP. :)

The GAP will have to over charge much more then they are now if they want to lure the prep crowd away from Hollister, A & F, or American Eagle. Apparently the prep crowd likes to only wear absurdly over priced clothes that are worth only what you would pay for them had you purchased them at Walmart.
