No, gerbils will chew through anything plastic in no time flat. Also, they are not that easy to clean, and peed on plastic is stinky.
The best housing for gerbils is a 10, 15 or 20 gallon long tank with a sturdy mesh wire top. It is escape proof, allows them to tunnel in deep litter (which grows as the chew up cardboard), and is good for viewing them too.
If you want you can put in a plastic playground in a 20 gallon tank for them to play on for a few hours then take it out (before they get around to gnawing it) and wash it in a drop of bleach and hot water (alway wash toys before giving them to gerbils -- otherwise the gerbils might smell funny and start to bicker)

crittertrails ar okay, but they dont provide very good ventilation. You should get a wire cage with a plastic bottom, bust still have areas to hook up climbing tubes, because they really enjoy those. And gerbils that dont like living together get out of hand. One of my gerbils ate the other gerbil when i put them together for a day. I sold the living one right away. But they need more space than a crittertrail provides, thats only enough space for one gerbil to live. Go with a bigger one.

It seems like a great cage. I have had the critter trail one and two, for my two hamsters because they like to live by themselves. The crittertrail three seems great, just make sure that your gerbils dont mind living together, cause some animals are more solitary. Otherwise, it allows them space to roam and the price seems reasonable.

Ok - yes - funny subject really -- it seems that it's up to the individual critter. Some love em some don't seem to care. You should always try to duplicate the enviroment they live in nature.
