I have a 12 gallon tank with a male betta and two oto catfish. What other fish could I add? I was thinking about Neon Tetras but how big of a school could I get? Are there any other small fish that would work well?

The otos only get about 2 inches long. The betta is about 1.5 inches of body but 3 inches if you include his tail.

None. Your tank is small and already full. Neons need to be in groups of 6-8 as a minimum or they will die from stress. Your tank can't support 6-8 neons. Maybe another Oto, as two is very stressful for them as well.

Be careful with what you add to a tank with a betta in it- they're aggressive, which is why people tend to keep them separated from other fish. Also- a twelve gallon tank is very big for just three fish- what size are the cat fish?

Don't overstock on fish, a twelve gallon tank is a decent size, so just be careful about that. You also have to consider the type of water each fish needs- some need different water temperatures, etc. Neons are okay to put in a tank with a betta as well as other tetras, just make sure that none of them are fin-nippers.

DEFINITE don't: guppies. They have long tails and the bettas will think that they are other bettas and try to attack them.

Okay fish:

white cloud minnow
tetras
danios
rasboras

Hope I helped!

Neon Tetras are good fish to have with your Betta. They should be in a school of 8-10

Im no fish expert but I know alot. I would say that if you are really interested in adding more fish. Upgrade to a bigger size because male betta's are VERY territorial and need there space. Neon tetra's may do well but I'm unsure. Consult someone in a pet store. One peice of advice that I do have for you is that you should always quarrantine new fish. Don't add the new fish in immediatly, this my cause toxic ammonia levels that will kill you fish

5-7 neons would be great, forget what everyone says about your betta, they're WRONG. Male bettas only fight with other bettas, male or female, and will sometimes flare at other fish with long flowing fins, like gourami. Bettas are a great community fish.

Please do yourself a favor and forget that 1 inch of fish per gallon "rule". That is the worst peice of trash nonsense ever vsited on the hobby and it seems every foolish store clerk in all of the mega stores spouts that drivel.

You can easily add a nice school of 6-8 neons to your tank as long as its properly filtered and you take care of the water changes like you should.

It's always risky introducing any new fish to an established tank. Sometimes the established residents become agressive towards new introductions and there is always the risk of disease being brought in and infecting all of the other fish.

I would say guppies. They are small and you could get a lot. Be careful! The other fish might think they are lunch!
