This year, no question:
The guy you forgot - Dirk Nowitzki.

Lebron's having a bad year, down in most stats.
Ray's having a forgettable year.
KG's hampered by an oh-so-awful team.
Carmello has the taint of MSG.
Shaq's played but a handful of games, and is getting old (despite having some FANTASTIC games recently).
Arenas... are you folks joking? Any one who can consistently put up less than 20% FG in a game, and STILL take over 20 shots is NOT a consideration for 'best player'. Guy is *supposedly* a PG, and is averaging less than 6 assists-per-game CAREER!
Not even the best player on his team: that goes to Caron Butler (have a look at results WITHOUT Butler!).

Kobe's up there... he has definitely taken steps in the one category he was lacking in: leadership.
Nash is Nash. Best PG in the biz, bar none.

But this year, they all pale beside Dirk. Not a Mavs fan here, but damn are they having a great year or what? Remember - they lost their first 4 games, so since then they are 50 wins, 5 losses. Amazing stuff, and Dirk's been the pick of the class.

You left out Dirk Nowitzki. He's having an MVP season in leading his Mavs to the best record in the NBA. Of course there's the old reliable Tim Duncan, who's recently been putting up big numbers and spearheading the Spurs' charge to the playoffs. Honorable mention goes to Yao Ming, Dwight Howard (the future Shaq), and Gilbert Arenas.

Amare Stoumdamire is begin to be a force again, Shawn Marion is an excellent all around player and one if not the most under rated players in the NBA, and Agent 0 (Gilbert Arenas) is a great scorer and is becoming one of the best.

The answer to this question is obviously Dirk Nowitzki. He should be the MVP. His team is 50-9 and Dirk leads them in scoring and rebounding. Night in and night out, Dirk has the ability to make jump shots, drive to the whole and is almost impossible to guard. At 7'0 he shoots 3s like ray allen and can post up and rebound like Garnett, passes like a guard, and drives to the whole like a 6'8 wing player.
