I am most interested in the views of Western Europeans, Americans and Turks. Eastern Europeans and Orthodox Christians are a little bit more familiar with it but their views are welcomed too.

The image I have in mind is the sad breakup of the Roman Empire and the end of the ancient world...A tragedy...But the Byzantine Empire allowed a part of the glory of Rome to continue on in w/ an oriental flair. (this is "orient" in the ancient sense, you understand) I think of Constantine, iconographic art, dazzling opulence, incense and spices, and Orthodox Christianity.

Istanbul was Constantinople!

Byzantine General Belisarius conquering Carthage in 533 A.D..... The last remnants of the once mighty Roman Empire (how sad, but not really, considering that they ended Carthage after the 3rd Punic War)

a cross between rome and russia b/c byzantine empire was the eastern kingdom when rome was split by constaninoble and b/c russia closely modled themselves after the byzantines

I think of the elaborate architecture and the Byzantine styles. I love them!

I immediately think of Hagia Sophia when I think of Byzantine.
