In the US they were called Half Cents, not halfpennies, which is probably why you were having trouble finding information. Below are some links for some information on the half cent.

Though I still can't find any information as to when half cents were removed from circulation, they were minted from 1793 to 1857.

I've been looking online, but am finding nothing other than the Virginia halfpenny, dated 1773, and produced by Britain. (FYI - half pennys were also called hapenny and haypenny - I did learn that much). I'll keep looking, I'm interested to find out myself.

I also found on the US Mint site that the first coin they produced was the penny, so my assumtion is that any half pennies were colonial or made by another nation.

Thanks peaches- I learned something!
