lunar, those happen all the time.

that's why solar eclipses are such a big deal.

as for describing them, ISN'T THAT WHAT WIKIPEDIA IS FOR??

From any one point on Earth, you will see more lunar eclipses than solar ones. This is because every time a lunar eclipse occurs, it is visible over the whole side of the Earth that can see the Moon at that time; when a solar eclipse occurs, however, the "path of totality" is very narrow. If you're just a little bit too far north or south, you won't see a total solar eclipse.
A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. It looks like the Moon is slowly being nibbled away, like a cookie, until it's all gone. As soon as the moon is completely dark, it turns blood-red. It stays red (or, more rarely, turns other colors) for several hours before getting slowly uncovered.
A solar eclipse, on the other hand, happens when the Earth passes through the Moon's shadow. Since the Moon is so much smaller than the Earth (or the Sun), it casts only a narrow shadow on the earth's surface, but within the path of that shadow the sun is completely hidden. I have never seen a total solar eclipse, only an annular one (where the moon appears too small to completely hide the sun), but I've heard that they're spectacular--almost as frightening as a tornado, and much the same color.

Lunar. There was one last night actually, where I live. Some people call it the strawberry moon. A Solar Eclipse is where the moon moves inbetween the earth and the sun, therefore, when you look at where the sun is supposed to be, you see this black thing with a "ring of fire" around it. You have to be in a certain spot to see the whole thing. The world around you gets dark in a solar eclipse for a little bit. These are actually dangerous and you shouldn't look at them with the naked eye.
A lunar eclipse is when the moon is in the earths shadow. so the order would be, sun shining on earth, earth casting shadow, moon in shadow. These occur at night. they are very fun to watch.
why? because it's only so often that the moon will move directly infront of the sun, and these occur at very precise spots around the world. Lunars are much more common.
