right i did this to my computer- you have to go to download the right IME (Input Method Execution) file. This is FREE. (as long as you have a legal version of windows)

you can do this to make ANY keyboard or any computer be able to type in chinese.

you have to determine what method of chinese you (or the person you wish to help) will use- do you use simplified (PRC) Chinese or traditional (Taiwan) chinese characters for instance.
Then you have to figure out what method you find most useful. There is about 12-20 different programs for traditional (Taiwan) characters. You can download for windows xp or 2000.

or if you use a 2000 or earlier computer:

for more information about IME methods in general check the wiki:

if you have a Mac or a Linux system I cant help you. you should include what system you use in the question next time you ask anything computer related.

if you have the new Vista program setup all that should be inside it I believe. you should read the help files if you have that- because as of yet I have not tried Windows Vista.

The easiest way is to get Chinese Windows and a Chinese keyboard. When you want to switch between Chinese and English, you just press the control and space keys.
If you live in Taiwan, it should be easy to get what you need. If not, just check the Chinese area of your city. Of course you must be able to understand Chinese to be able to do all of this.
If this is not possible, or too much trouble for your purposes, then I would suggest getting translation software, or simply using an on-line translator. AltaVista has one for free. I have included the link to it below.
Hope this helps. If you still have problems, maybe you could talk to a computer retailer in a Chinese area of your city.

You can click control and shift, first control then shift and then you'll see the language change from english to chinese and back. It should be easy to identify if you're a chinese as I am.
