Have you tried resetting it? Hold down Menu + Enter (middle button) for around 6 seconds and the iPod will reset. Hopefully you won't have the same problem after that, but if you do, rather than calling 1800-APPLE, try:

mine is a nano and it crashed on the airplane. i held down the middle button and the menu button at the same time and it restarted. you have to be patient though because it takes a few seconds to work. (:

My sister's ipod once froze.....she doesn't remember exactly what she did, but she thinks she pressed the middle, white button and the menu button at the same time. no guarantees that that's is, but u can try.

hold down the menu button (top button) and the middle button for about 20 seconds. It will reset all your hardware without losing your downloads! menu and middle (maybe the bottom and middle if top and middle doesnt work)
