I live in scripps ranch, san diego, california! I love it to death. I lived in San francisco for 12 years (downtown near the new stadium), and i also loved it. The biggest differences: Cost and weather. San francisco is the most expensive city i can think of, and while san diego inst much better, its better quality for the price. In san diego we have the most beautiful beaches, women, and the red light district is amazing! there is nothing that san diego doesnt have (ie, everything is about 20 minutes away no matter what). We have a great community and i will never leave this wonderful city. I think everyone should spend some time in san diego just so they can appreciate life a little bit more, it is a place that has unlimited things to do *literally you will never get bored here* and the best weather in the world.

it depends on the kind of person you are...

if the weather dictates your happiness, then San Diego for sure. proximity to the Los Angeles and real beaches is a plus.

if you immerse yourself in the arts and find happiness in culture and the arts, then San Francisco is for you. if you prefer an urban environment, with a diverse population and an actual skyline then you'll be right at home in the bay.

San Diego has more sun...San Francisco is a beautiful city also, but abit colder. each one has their charm ! The marine pollution drifting over from Mexico makes the S.D. beaches toxic sometimes !

Weather is better in San Diego, you can swim in the ocean 7 or 8 months of the year, but you are basically taking your life in your hands to swim in San Francisco. SF has worse traffic, but better cultural life. SF is in a metro area with a population of about 4.5 million, SD about 2 million. SF area has several excellent colleges and universities but SD has only UCSD in that category (though SDSU students and alums will no doubt disagree!). Life is easier in SD, but more dynamic in SF. Your call.

I've lived in both, San Diego has more down to earth people and much better weather, but lacks a little in the culture department. If you're more outdoorsy, go with SD, if you're a pretentious, pseudo-intellectual, coffee house philosophizing communist then SF is for you. :)

Depends what you like but I'd say San Diego over SF.

Both places are very scenic and are by the water, hills, mountains, valleys, beaches.
SD has the best weather in the nation and it's pretty much always perfect. SF is pretty windy and foggy much of the year. Summers are so cold there compared to everywhere else. And you can never swim in the ocean there b/c it's too cold in the water and too cold at the beach.

SF is a very sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and a very urban city. Lots of wealthy people and fine food, arts, ect.. But some of the people in the city there are also pretentious psuedo-intellectual wannabe snobs. They think they are so much superior than everyone else and act so smug. People in SD are much more down to earth and real. SD has a much better and younger vibe than SF; I think the weather and lifestyle makes people happier down here. In SD you'll see 40yo professionals riding around on a beach cruiser in a t-shirt, board shorts, and flip flops. In SF those same 40yo professionals are shopping at the Banana Republic and driving around in some luxury SUV talking about how much they care for the environment (liberal hyprocrisy is omnipresent there).

The cost of living is better in SD than in SF. You can get a decent apt near the beach for a much better price than you'll pay in SF. Traffic is also much better in San Diego although SF has more public transit to take; BART is a good system.

People in SF are too concerned with politics and activism, People in SD are just happy to be living in such a beautiful place with great weather and just want to have fun and enjoy living there. It's just more laid back and chill.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area and loved going to SF. I still do love going to that city but I wouldn't want to live there; the people inside that little bubble just annoy the hell out of me with their attitudes. The Bay Area has really cool and laid back people overall but many snobby know it all's seem to gravitate towards Sf and Berekelely and completely ruin those cities. SD just has a much chiller, less pretentious vibe and I think it's a better place to live, but the Bay Area is a great place too.
