It really just comes down to warranty. I usually recommend the dell for people if they're not big on customizing and just want a system that works. I also recommend throwing the extra money towards a 3 year plan.
If anything goes bad on the computer and you can sit through the hour long phone call to india, dell will eventually fix it.

I am a convert. Previously I preferred dell all of the way. But now I realize that i just get more out of hp. In the look departmet HP has it hands down. While dell is still going for the non-descript business look. HP has a sleek new design black with barely visible lines running throughit plus blue lcd lights. The HP's tend to be lighter than the comparable dells. The screens are brighter. Most models now include built-in webcams. The laptops come with remotes which are great for listening to your music and controlling it from afar. Innumerous features! Go with HP.

When you customize a dell You end up paying $200 more than an HP with the same hardware except HP gives you an integrated web camera and mic. plus a Lghtscribe DVD - CD burner
Who said Dells are cheap. B/S.

Dell has a good reputation, but I've owned an HP for a long time and have never had any problems with it. Dell is much more expensive too.

Its more a matter of support and parts interchangeability and as a PC repairman I wouldnt recommend a Dell to ANYONE! They arent very upgrade friendly and a lot of the parts can only be replaced with orginal Dell components and they charge out the bum for parts! HP is the top dog when it comes to support and ease of restoration!

That is like comparing Fords to Chevy's. You will always get someone who had problems with one or the other and will say that they suck.
But in reality, they all use pretty much the same components and are basically the same. Though Dell components tend to be more proprietary.
The only discernable difference is in customer service.
Dell has american customer service agents, but you have to ship it to them to get it fixed.
HP has outsourced customer service to India, but you can bring it in to any authorized service center to get it fixed. They have service centers in pretty much every city that is bigger than 25,000 people.
