How is it possible for someone to feel pain in a bodily limb that is not there?

According to the latest theories, a region of the brain known as the "somatosensory cortex" creates the sensation of a missing limb when the actual limb is removed. Go here for details and read the "Neurological" section:

its the neurological connections that are still in your brain. You have been wiring neuro transmitters for that limb for a long time. Sometimesw your brain forgets that it isnt there anymore.

The same way you can have a tooth ache when the tooth has been pulled already. I would guess its something to do with the nerve endings.
