Why are many people so neurotic about breastfeeding?

It's ridiculous. Breasts are for feeding babies, not for titillation - so why are so many peoplee so neurotic about seeing someone breastfeed? Do they have a problem with basic human nature? They need a harsh lesson in relaity fast and to get over their pathetic hangups. Feeding a baby is far more important than whining fools.

Clive, thanks for your opinion. I'm not naive at all, actually. Breasts have been eroticised because WE have made them so. Don't get me wrong, I like 'em as much as anyone else!! My point is, though, that as a civilised society, are we really such animals that we cannot put our own, self-created labels aside while a mother feeds her child?

I completely agree with you. I have no trouble at all with it, and have felt for years that women should be able to go about socially without covering their breasts any more than men do. I was kayaking with Diane once up on Little Sebago Lake and she asked me (she was sitting in the front seat of a two-seat kayak with me) if she could please take off her top and I said please do and she did and she fully enjoyed the paddle. No one was about, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world to me. Women should have the same choice men do as to whether or not to cover or uncover their breasts, and when it comes to feeding a small child I have always believed it is completely natural and should not be a big thing whatsoever. I think people get a lot of that foolishness from their parents, whose parents had Puritanical upbringings and were taught from an early age that their bodies were sinful and ugly. I could not disagree more. I hope we live to see the day that the general public takes a more enlightened attitude about being naked, period. Women with their breasts uncovered always look so much more natural and many of them are equally more comfortable that way, as well. I would leave it to the women themselves as to the choice they wish to make about this.

I completely agree with you there -- except on one count. I don't believe that we have eroticized breasts. Rather, they are attractive to men on an evolutionary standpoint. Think of it this way: breasts are meant to feed the young. Therefore, when a man sees a woman's breasts, there is a primal recognition that the woman can feed his young, thereby propogating the species (or more specifically, his genetic line). So of course breasts are attractive, they serve an evolutionary purpose!

But it is absolutely ridiculous for people to freak out about breastfeeding in public. For one, you can't see anything while the child is latched on, and even if you could, most women are modest enough to drape a blanket over their shoulder. Why should an infant suffer hunger because someone doesn't want to watch you feed your child? Personally, I have no problem breastfeeding in public, and if someone doesn't want to see it, they can go somewhere else. It doesn't bother ME to watch someone else eat THEIR lunch!

Modest women can use breast pumps and bottle the milk for public use. My mate's wife does it that way. At home she only exposes enough to give the baby a feed.

Some of us giggle at the words 'boobs' as if its a dirty or naughty word. Some of us are brought up to believe in what they have been force fed as children through out their childhoods into adulthood.

I think we can be uptight about certain things and need to be more open minded. I try to be open minded as possible about things but I must admit I do sometimes fall into the 'narrow minded' section on some things. I'm only human!

I do not think its wrong to breastfeed your baby although I have been brought up with this mental image that it's wrong to expose your body to the public so end up covering up all the time.

Its sad but we are stuck.... I admire those who are not ashamed to be confident and show the world what they are and/or can do.

When breastfeeding... I felt insecure and not confident when I did it in public a few times. was happier to do that at home in privacy away from stares. So in the end I just took expressed milk in a bottle with me whenever I went out with my baby.

I think the British public needs to be more relaxed towards breastfeeding. Some countries accept it better.

I'll like to say to all the mothers out there who breastfeed to be proud of what they are doing and not to stop because of what others think.

Yes I once saw this mom at the air port who had to breastfeed her baby and people who walked by looked at her like she shouldn't be doing that and little did they know she had bottles with the milk in it but they dumped it out because it was more than 3oz. I thought that was just unreal because it's not like they have a place for moms who breastfeed to go and sit with out anyone looking at them.

Thats what im saying! When I was little my mom was taking the bus and had me in her arms BREAST FEEDING ME! People couldnt stand seeing her breast feeding me although she had me covered in a blanket. I dont understand, breasts can be shown to degrade women but they cant be shown to see what great they can do! How MILK comes from a woman's breast is SOOOOO incridbly AMAZING to me! And I'm hoping I can breast feed my babies.
