I've got that problem too when using windows media player (I assumed you use wmp). Mine showed a message that a sound device is not found or installed...(something like that) . Have you try doing system restore back to a previous restore point? I did that and wmp is working again. Good luck! Here's how. Press Start, highlight Accessories, system tools and you will find system restore.

Sometimes sound card drivers become corrupt and no longer function, however before you download a new driver be sure to uninstall the old driver first the install the new one. Some corrupt driver programs are usually caused by poorly written driver programs. BTW,after you uninstall the old driver you should download a free very popular program called CrapCleaner. It removes the entries of the old driver that resides in the registry. If you keep the old data in the registry when you install the new driver you may end up with the same problem. Do this first.

Go to the manafactures website and download a new sound driver and this will overwrite any problems that you now have with the driver

Good LUCK!

Lots of laptops have mechanical volume control knobs on them. It sounds like you may have nudged yours without noticing it. Look for a dial or knob and if you find it try turning it up.
