Um...some questions about the musical rent...how did the characters in rent get HIV/AIDS? I know that about half the main characters are gay, but I don't know how Mimi and the rest got HIV/AIDS. Could someone give me a brief summary/personal opinion about all the main characters? And could someone list all the songs IN ORDER please?? I know I'm asking alot, but ive only seen half the DVD.

Just so you know, the musical live is far better than the movie. I loved it! Colins and Angel it leads us to believe got AIDS because of their sexuality. Mimi got AIDS from sharing a needle with others while doing drugs. Roger got AIDS from sharing a needle and sleeping with his girlfriend April. I love all the characters for different reasons!
Mark is the quiet camera man who detaches himself from everyone, observing but not particiapating.
Roger is the rocker looking for glory, and his life gets changed by the presence of Mimi.
Mimi is the happy, seductful exotic dancer, who lives life for today. Angel is her bestfriend.
Benny is Mark, Roger, Colins, and Maureen's ex roommate who left them to marry the rich Allison. After his marriage, he became their landlord, and threatens to evict them, regaurdless if they were friends. He had an affair with Mimi three months before the musical begins.
Angel is the carefree dragqueen who puts happiness in everyone's life. She hates it when people are upset.
Colins is the philosopher, who hates the government and everything about them. He's the rebel.
Maureen is the other rebel. She's the drama queen who loves attention. She cheated on Mark with Joanne, and then cheats on Joanne with various others.
Joanne is the lawyer who doesn't fit in. She isn't an artist, and she went to a expensive college, but she gets along fine with everyone of the Bohemians. She and Mark bond over similar experiances with Maureen.
Like I said, I love every single one of them! They all bring so much to the world, and they're a family.

Rent was originally done in the 90's when AIDS/HIV were big in the news and it explored relationships with people and AIDS and the ramifications of AIDS on a small scale, adding a more human face to the disease.

Mimi was a drug addict so it is suspected she contracted it by dirty needles. it is never directly said how she got AIDS, but the song "light my candle" alludes to her needing a candle to heat the herion for injection. including the line " i think that i dropped my stash"

Roger contracts AIDS from his girlfriend and she commits suicide (we never meet her) they were both junkies at the time. by the begining of Rent Roger has recovered from his addiction and is clean. So we suspect it was also contracted from needle sharing with thie girlfreind. There is also the possiblity it was from unprotected sex.

Angel we suspect it was from sex as there isnt a reference to drug use.

The other characters do not have AIDS but have thier own flaws.
I reccomend seeing the Play if it is ever in town. a lot of subtext is lost in the DVD. But it was a good attempt at transferring an almost completely musical script into something more palatable for a larger audience.

Rent is my favorite musical, although I haven't seen it on Broadway, I can probably help you. I'll try not to give anything away!
You know how Angel and Collins got the disease... but Mimi and Roger got HIV/AIDS because they abused drugs. (Roger, however, has quit- Mimi is still addicted.)
Characters:
Mimi- 19 years old, addicted to drugs. She has HIV/AIDS. She works as a stripper at the Catscratch club. She is in love with Roger and loves to have fun and live for today. Mimi is probably my favorite character, despite the fact that she's kind of a slut. I think she would be a really fun character to portray because she has some amazing songs and a really romantic role in the story.
Roger- a guitarist who is trying to write his "one song glory." his last girlfriend died from AIDS because she was addicted to drugs, and he was too. He isn't anymore, and he thinks he might be in love with Mimi but he is cautious because she is addicted to drugs. He is romantic, but runs away when he is too afraid of something- such as seeing Mimi die. He's another character I really like.
Mark- a filmmaker who lives with Roger. He used to go out with Maureen. He is earnest and really wants to make a good film. He's kind of a nerd, but he's funny and smart.
Maureen- Mark's ex-girlfriend- she dumped him for her new girlfriend, Joanne. She's a performance artist and her show is one of my favorite parts in the musical. she sometimes doesn't get the difference between "being friendly" and flirting. She is really fun!
Joanne- she's a honest, smart lawyer who is Maureen's girlfriend. She really wants Maureen to stay faithful but is having a hard time. She also helps Mark land a job with one of his films. she is very sensible but has a fun side too.
Angel- a transvestite who wears wild clothes and loves her friends to death. Angel is in love with Collins and is never mean to anyone. she is classy and sweet and another one of my favorites.
Collins- His first name is Tom but everyone calls him Collins. He teaches at NYU and is in love with Angel. He is smart and he seems like the kind of person you can always depend on.
Benny- the landlord and the "bad guy" of the show. He has good intentions, but he's trying to evict people. (I can't give you details if you haven't seen the whole thing! =)
