I am recovering from a herniated disc. I want to strengthen my abs...know any good, safe excercises?

Suck your gut in and out and that will do it the safest way. Just suck it in and then let it out. Do about 20 and tell me what you think. My soldiers do that in the army. I have them do that for 30mins a day just to make sure they can pass their p.t. test.

I 'm not sure that you can do sit ups but the only other thing I can suggest is to suck your stomach in while contracting your abdominal muscles and hold for 10 seconds. And do 3 sets of 10 or however many you want.

An exercise that is low impact and fairly effective is yoga, specifically the plank pose. It basically looks like a pushup with your arms pushed all the way up. You can also modify it and rest on your elbows instead.

It doesn't put flexion strain on the discs and you have to keep your abdominal muscles tight to maintain a straight back.

Do sit ups and try playing some sports to hard abs.
