A mental disability is when a person is out of touch with reality. "Unusual thoughts" are what characterized me. I just feel highly developed in the average thought range. I function well in society and keep my developed personality within acceptable parameters and under selective conversation ranges but my thoughts qualify me for disability and I receive social security each month so I don't have to work. I like who I am and talk with my inner voices every day. I know of my condition and I avoid aggravating stress. I take medication that help keep me out of the jumbles and I have my family's support and patience. I function just fine but have to be on the lookout for anxiety every day. Peace is my guardian and I like the color purple.

This question is quite vague, as there are so many different types of mental disorders. Some are treated successfully with medication and therapy--these people usually live very normal lives.

Eating disorders are mental disabilities--as are addicts, alcoholics, the clinically depressed, sufferers of anxiety/panic, bipolar...too many to list. That is why you would need to ask a question on a specific mental disorder to get a good answer.
