as a young first time buyer i will not be able to buy a house for a good few years even though i am on a decent wage, because of the ridiculously high house prices, but if i lived in a council house on a low rent for a couple of years i would have the right to buy it. I have never asked for anything from the government, yet these people get all the help in the world. WHY?!!!

my point is, it is virtually impossible for someone like me to get a mortgage, i would be having to pay over a third of my household income for a mortgage, and be paying it for 45 years! and thats if i can convince a bank to give me one! so i dont have a choice, the people in bought council houses will be in a much better position than me!!!

just to clarify, i dont have a problem with people who live in council houses, i have a problem with them being allowed to buy them! i do not wish to disrespect people in any way, im sure some people who live in council houses are hardworking, i object to people buying council houses at hugely discounted prices then selling them for a huge profit.

I totally agree with you, I know very few hard working people who live in a council house. My husband and I are in the same position you are even though we both have excellent jobs in central London. People in council houses can have the right to buy after just 3 years, now the government are trying to stop too many people from exploiting this scheme by enforcing a rebate period for the dicount which means that if they sell the property within 3 years they have to pay back a sliding proportion of the discount. I know a woman who deliberatly got herself pregnant to a stranger, got given a council house (in a great area) had all her rent and council tax paid, received benefits and by the time the child went to school with the discount she could afford to buy the property, it really makes me sick! Where is the justice for working a 60 hour week?

Spannerbox - under the Tories Right to Buy rules Councils weren't allowed to reinvest the proceeds into building replacement council houses. Also the Tories forced many estates out of council control through rigged ballots of tenants (if you didn't vote you were counted as voting Yes to the change).

Sadly the real villains here are existing home owners. Once we're bought somewhere we are all greedily waiting for the price to rise.

If you think it's so unfair why don't you give up your "decent wage" and try living like they do? Many people who live in council homes work just as hard - if not harder. Working more hours for less pay, doing the kind of jobs that nobody else wants. It's not easy I can tell you that much.

Less well-off people also need somewhere to stay and raise their families - believe it or not. So why shouldn't they get the opportunity to buy their council home? It's not their fault that house prices have gotten as high as they have. :-)

what a load of crap people in council houses work just as hard and pay out just as much as anyone else if you think theyre so lucky why dont you put your name on the housing list and get one theres nothing to stop you
unless you don`t want to either wait 10 or 15 years for a good area and don`t want a house within 2 years in a slum area either
and for her information up there the government doesn`t need to bring out any new laws your not allowed to sell a house you bought from the council for 5 years anyway
get a life

These houses were built so that people could afford homes.
After paying rent for years (not so low as you may think) a lot took advantage of the right to buy.
i am a council tenant I pay full rent.
How do i get all the help in the world?

the sale of council house's stopped years ago, it was brought in by Maggie thatcher, which at the time seem a good idea, the problems rose because the councils did not replace their stock of house's. most council have handed the housing stock over to housing associations, which do not allow the tenant to buy them theses days. Its is very tough for young people to get on the housing ladder, but it was tough for me when i brought my first house, its just something you have to do just bite the bullet and go for it

certainly we could continuously take priority over immigrants! all of us understand that! regrettably the authorities does no longer - and the project isn't totally resolved until eventually Labour has been given the rush! cupboard Ministers and MPs are chuffed sufficient because they don't look put able the position housing is a issue for them. the right to purchase council residences isn't an argument. please explain a bit more why you think they get help? they pay there rent and council tax, so i dont understand why you think they get help, they get no help what so ever, all they get is after many and i mean many years of being a council tenant they get the right to buy, the more time there a council tenant the cheaper they get the house, that was a rule that yes thatcher brought in, so i'm very confussed to why you think they get help, why have a go at them because you cant get on the ladder,

BTW my parents bought there council house 5 years ago for £14,000 a nice 3 bedroom house in a nice quite area, its valued at £140,000 now, LOL

It is not such a good deal. The homes are a nightmare. Not to be envied.

Think twice before you buy your Council House.

The only advanatge is that it gives you a way out, to move from somewhere you don't like.
