It is partly a self esteem issue. It may have to do with the fact that you think your "real" self isn't good enough or doesn't meet up to other people's standards. I don't know you, but it could be that you change they way you act (alter your personality) with each person you meet(conform to their behavior/personality), so that you appear more likeable even though that may not be who you are. It could also be because you are shy and put on a mask because you are too afraid that people may not like the real you.
So... to sum it up, you may lack the confidence (self esteem) to act like yourself, or you may just feel you have to conform to what everyone else does/ acts like or what there personality is.
If you be yourself and the people you hang out with can't accept that, then move on and find people that will accept you for you (flaws and all!) :)!!!
<3 hope that helps

*in response to Tamara C's comment: practicing what to do and say around others that are "socially acceptable" only helps with making small talk and does not encourage independant thought or allow people to be "themself", it only encourages people to conform to how other people are and become even more masked, and artificial/fake.

Maybe you're not being yourself when you are alone and actually being yourself while with others. If not the case, then stop trying to convey yourself as similar or the same as the people you are with. Be individual in thought and actions. If you aren't accepted for who you are, you are hanging out with the wrong people. Also, the nickname Ash-HOLE doesn't scream high self-esteem to me.

Prepare yourself with things to say and do around others. Find things that are socially acceptable and practice them. That way you have some reliable stand by functions to help ease you through those awkward moments. Not many people realize this but socializing takes practice and the more prepared you are the better you'll do. Good luck!

It could be self-esteem issues. You always have to remember that people can tell you're not being yourself, when you're doing something that's not really "you".
Don't be afraid to show the world who you really are.
