The top 8 teams from both the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference are seeded and scheduled to play each other according to seed (1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, etc)

The top 3 seeds are given to the leader in each division within the conference regardless of points. Seeds 4-8 are then determined by points and in case of a tie, wins.

There are two conferences, East and West, the divisional leaders get the top three spots in each conference and they they square off (1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, etc) and the teams that make it through from each conference play in the finals, after the top 3 divisional leaders it is the next 5 teams with the most points
